Family Trips to the Baltics: 10 things you need to know

The Baltics is an ideal destination for a family trip, offering a wide variety of activities that cater to all ages. Yes, we don’t have massive luxurious all-inclusive hotels like the Mediterranean coast, but we have fascinating museums, exciting outdoor adventures, sandy beaches, fun waterparks, engaging animal farms, free playgrounds, museums, and activities that can be explored all year round.

Want to plan a family trip to Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia? Here are the top 10 reasons that you need to know if you are planning family trip to the Baltics.

1. Consider a family trip as a group

Traveling with a few families as a group can be a wonderful experience, offering both fun and practicality. Children have playmates throughout the trip, keeping them entertained, while parents can share responsibilities like organizing activities or watching kids. Additionally, traveling together can lead to better rates on accommodation, car rental, flights, and group activities. This setup not only makes the trip more affordable but also allows everyone to enjoy group-friendly activities, from family picnics to outdoor adventures all year round. Ultimately, it creates lasting memories and strengthens bonds between families.

2. Water is very clean and safe to drink

Drinking water is generally of high quality and safe to drink straight from the tap in all the Baltic Countries. This makes it convenient for travelers, especially families, as you can easily refill your water bottles at hotels, restaurants, and other public places. In many urban areas, you’ll also find free water-filling stations in parks, at tourist attractions, and near public spaces, particularly in the larger cities like Vilnius, Riga or Tallinn. These stations encourage eco-friendly practices, allowing travelers to stay hydrated without relying on bottled water, which is both convenient and environmentally friendly. Be sure to carry reusable water bottles, as they are easy to refill throughout your journey.

3. Prepare for the weather: what to pack?

The Baltics are amazing all year round –  we have colorful fall with crisp air, beautiful snowy winter, blooming spring and hot sunny summers. Every season weather varies but there are few things that might come in hand all seasons:

  • Comfortable shoes – for exploring cities or nature, pack comfortable and sturdy shoes for both parents and kids.
  • Sweater or light jacket – even if you’re traveling in summer. We can have some winds and rain so better to be prepared.
  • An umbrella – as it’s said – there is no bad weather if you are prepared. Especially if you travel in the fall.
  • Warm accessories – hats, scarves, and gloves are essential in colder months, especially if you plan outdoor activities in winter or late fall.
  • Swimwear and flip-flops – will come in handy if you decide to take a dip in the Baltic Sea in summer or decide to have fun in a waterpark or saunas.

4. Museums are cheap and also has special family offers

Many museums across Lithuania and all the Baltics offer smaller or completely free entry for children and also offer special family tickets, making it easier for families to explore and learn together. If you visit Lithuania, we recommend you visit some of the museums on the last Sunday of the month. We have an event called Museum Sundays where a lot of museums open their doors to visitors without any admission fees. This includes popular spots such as the Lithuanian Sea Museum in Klaipėda, the Energy and Technology Museum in Vilnius (don’t miss the interactive Tesla Show), the Palace of the Gran Dukes. These experiences allow kids to discover Lithuania’s rich history, science, and culture in a fun and engaging way.

5. Unique experiences that shouldn’t be missed

The Baltics offer many unique experiences for families that we recommend not to miss. For example:

  • Take a ride on the historic Anykščiai Narrow Gauge Railway, a scenic train journey that children and adults alike will enjoy.
  • Snow Arena in Druskininkai offers year-round skiing and snowboarding area under the roof for all ages and different levels of experience.
  • Plane spotting site right at the Vilnius airport with children playground, coffee kiosk and more.
  • Zip through the skies on the Sigulda Zipline in nearby Latvia, a thrilling adventure for older children and teens.
  • Explore the Rummu Quarry in Estonia, where you can swim, snorkel, and explore the remnants of an old prison submerged in crystal-clear waters. It’s an unforgettable and visually stunning experience.

6. Discover interactive museums

Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have a wide range of interactive, modern, and fun museums designed specifically with families in mind. We list only a few but there is way more!

  • The AHAA Science Centre in Tartu and Proto Invention Factory in Tallinn offer hands-on science fun for kids.
  • Toy Museum in Vilnius invites all families to learn about history of toys.
  • Car Museums in Vilnius and Riga or Railway museum in Vilnius provide an engaging journey through the history of transport.

7. Explore sustainable local animal farms

Lithuania boasts numerous family-friendly animal farms, offering interactive experiences for children who love animals. Many of these farms allow kids to feed and pet the animals, giving them a chance to learn about farm life and different species. For example you can visit Owl Park, Birds Village, Farms of Alpacas, Pearl Deer Park, Park of Bisons and more.

8. Book a family-friendly hotel

Lithuania and Latvia are home to family-friendly resorts with amazing water parks. Resorts in places like Druskininkai (Lithuania) and Jūrmala (Latvia) feature indoor water parks, offering fun for all ages, regardless of the weather. These hotels ensure both relaxation and entertainment, making them an excellent choice for family stays all year round.

9. Dine at family-friendly restaurants

Many restaurants in all the Baltics now offer dedicated children’s zones, ensuring kids stay entertained after eating or while parents enjoy their coffee and meals. In Lithuania we observe that this practice is becoming a norm, offering stress-free dining experiences for families.

10. Don’t forget travel insurance

Make sure your travel insurance is in place, either through the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or other options, to cover any unexpected situations. Always travel with calm heart and safe finances.
